‘Connect in Nature’

- the outdoor recovery group

'Connect in Nature', is our pilot outdoor recovery group in the Scottish Borders. This project was funded by the Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund for people in recovery to connect with each other and nature, and improve their wellbeing. The 18 week programme took place in 2024.

Coming to the woods has given me a place to be open about my feelings in a trusting and caring group who won’t judge me. I have found the open woodland a relaxing environment to bond with people I wouldn’t normally see in my every day life.

It is a space I can connect with others and feel a connection to because it’s the same people and I know what is shared in the group stays in the group

Coming here has impacted my mental wellbeing positively, I look forward to coming each week as I feel relaxed in the woods. Its peaceful and whatever the weather we all still connect with each other and build positive relationships. Also doing activities you wouldn’t normally do e.g. making things, cutting and preparing wood and food on the fire. Sometimes I feel flat and tired but always leave feeling better

The woodland group has helped me so much. It’s really lifted my spirits from being in quite a dark place, feeling quite isolated, but it has opened up opportunities for me, as well as meeting people who I really have connected with and resonate with. I feel like I’ve made real friends who are on my wavelength as I felt very disconnected before starting this group. I feel like it’s come at just the right time for me. I hope to keep in touch with everyone and engage in further activities.

There’s something about being in the woods that makes you feel safe enough to be really open and honest. When you see someone else being open and honest that encourages you to be open and honest.
