Gratitude
Gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness and a host of mental and physical benefits. Studies have shown that feeling thankful can improve sleep, mood and immunity. Gratitude can decrease depression, anxiety, difficulties with chronic pain and risk of disease.
Three forms of gratitude:
Feeling grateful for the good things in your life;
Expressing your gratitude to the people who have made your life better; and
Adopting new behaviours as a result of interacting with those who have helped you.
Activity:
Daily gratitude practice: - write at least 3 things that you are grateful for in your journal every day - try to make it a routine to do each night before you go to sleep.
Meditation
Meditation is a practice, and as with most things, the more we do it the better we get. As a beginner it is often easier to listen to a guided meditation, many are available online for free. Meditation aids in calming the ‘monkey brain’ and is a great way to bring you into the present, through connection with your breathing.
Insight Timer is a good (and free) app to download onto your phone for meditation. It has loads of guided meditations, breathwork, music and much more for sleep, anxiety and stress.
